It is 9 pm. The film has just started, or the match is entering its final minutes. Then the picture freezes. It resumes, freezes again, and the loading wheel settles in the middle of the screen. If that sounds familiar, you are not alone: evening buffering is one of the most common IPTV complaints. The good news is that it nearly always has an identifiable cause and a practical solution. Work through these eight causes in order—after quickly checking number 8, the easiest one to rule out—and change only one thing at a time.
1. Evening Wi-Fi congestion
At night, your Wi-Fi is no longer working alone. Every device in the home connects at once, while neighbouring networks compete for the same radio channels. The 2.4 GHz band, still used by many TVs and boxes, becomes crowded: interference increases, walls weaken the signal and video is the first thing to suffer.
Try these steps:
- Connect the TV or box to your router’s 5 GHz network when available.
- Move the device closer to the router. Every thick wall costs signal quality.
- Use an Ethernet cable for the most reliable connection. If a cable is impractical, a powerline adapter can help.
Household interference matters too. A microwave or wireless speaker close to the router can disturb the signal. One revealing test is to play the same stream through a phone’s 4G/5G hotspot. If it becomes smooth, the problem is probably inside your home network.
2. Not enough stable speed for 4K
A 4K stream needs about 25 Mbps of stable bandwidth; Full HD is comfortable around 10 Mbps. A connection that is only just fast enough in the afternoon may struggle in the evening, when your family and your neighbourhood are using it heavily.
Two useful actions:
- Run a speed test at the time the freezing happens, not at 3 pm. Evening performance is the number that matters.
- Temporarily switch the stream to HD. It still looks good and uses far less bandwidth.

3. An overloaded router
Your router may have been running for weeks without a break. Connections accumulate, memory fills up and everything gradually slows down. Add a console downloading a game, a cloud photo backup or another video playing in the next room, and little capacity remains for the main screen.
- Unplug the router for thirty seconds, then restart it.
- Pause large downloads and automatic backups during viewing.
- If your router offers QoS or device priority, prioritise the TV or streaming box.
4. Peak demand on the server
Between roughly 9 pm and 11 pm, many viewers connect at once. That demand also affects servers: some cope poorly when traffic rises suddenly, even when your home connection is sound.
Look for a pattern. If several channels buffer at the same hours while ordinary browsing and other online video work normally, the server may be the bottleneck. 5. Player settings that do not suit your connection
The app sits between the server and your screen, and its default settings do not suit every device or network.

- Try another internal player. A stream that struggles with the default player may run smoothly with VLC or ExoPlayer.
- Clear the app cache occasionally. A bloated cache can cause slowdowns that look like a network fault.
After each change, leave the same channel running for several minutes before deciding whether it helped.
6. A device running out of resources
An older Fire TV Stick or Smart TV may simply be under strain. Typical signs are heat, slow menus and freezing that starts after an hour or two.
- Close background apps to free memory and processor time.
- Restart the device before a long viewing session instead of leaving it in standby for weeks.
- Give the box airflow; hardware squeezed behind a hot television can overheat.

7. A VPN or DNS slowing the route
A VPN can help or hurt. It may bypass evening traffic shaping by an Internet provider, but a distant or overloaded VPN server adds latency and cuts speed.
Test the same channel on the same evening with and without the VPN. Keep whichever setup is more stable, and choose a nearby VPN location if you use one. Slow DNS can also delay channel loading; a reputable public resolver such as Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) or Google (8.8.8.8) is easy to test in the router or device settings.
8. Expired access or incorrect credentials
This simple cause is easy to overlook. A subscription that expired yesterday, a playlist URL that changed or one mistyped character in the login can waste an evening of troubleshooting.
Before changing technical settings, check the expiry date, the credentials entered in the app and whether the provider sent an updated playlist. Thirty seconds here may save you an hour elsewhere.
